Ingredients for the Tofu:

  • 1 block of 300g tofu

  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch

  • 2 teaspoons garlic powder

Ingredients for the Sauce:

  • Half a very finely chopped onion

  • 3 cloves of garlic

  • Small cubes of red chili pepper, very finely chopped, seeds removed (if you don't like spicy, you can substitute with 1 strip of red bell pepper, finely chopped)

  • 2cm of chopped ginger

  • Juice of 2 oranges (about 140ml)

  • Zest of 1 orange

  • 2 and a half tablespoons of rice vinegar

  • 2 teaspoons of soy sauce

  • 1 teaspoon of cornstarch

  • Salt to taste

  • 1 stalk of green onions

  • Sesame oil for drizzling

  • 1 tablespoon of oil

Step by step:

Instructions:

  1. Cut the tofu into cubes, about 1.5cm in diameter.

  2. Place the tofu cubes in a bowl and mix them with cornstarch and garlic powder.

  3. In a non-stick skillet, fry the tofu in a reasonable amount of oil (the more oil you use, the crispier it will be). Fry all sides of the cubes until they become crispy.

  4. While frying the tofu, prepare the sauce ingredients.

  5. Chop the onion, remove the seeds from the chili, crush the garlic, and chop the ginger.

  6. In a bowl, mix the orange zest, orange juice, vinegar, soy sauce, and cornstarch.

  7. In a skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil and sauté the onion.

  8. When the onion becomes translucent, add the garlic, chili, and ginger, and sauté for a few minutes.

  9. Add the prepared sauce mixture and cook until it starts to boil.

  10. Add the crispy tofu cubes and mix until the sauce thickens and covers all of the tofu.

  11. Turn off the heat, add the chopped green onions, and drizzle with a few drops of sesame oil while it's still hot.

  12. Serve your tofu with basmati or Japanese rice. Enjoy!
